Kumite Technique Course sponsored by BVSK
On Sunday 2 October four students from RSKC attended a kumite technique course sponsored by BVSK, the course instructor was Sensei Sid Tadrist, a multiple kumite champion.
The morning started with just a new take on basic techniques such as Oi zuki, kizami zuki and gyaku zuki. We were encouraged to pull hikite back to the max and launch the punch totally committed to a kill. We then progressed onto doing all the punches moving backward and forward concentrating on hikite, then the added pain of compression in the rear leg to generate move explosive power and technique.
These drills were done time and again to stress upon us the how difficult it was but also how effective it can be.
Sensei then focused on training drills for the legs, these did not appear to bad until we kept doing them over and over, the lactic soon built up, making the legs shudder, but through the expert tuition of sensei Sid he explained the dynamics of movement, how the feet should be positioned, before and after the compression, back position, hip rotation to the max, head straight to the target, explode out, kill, relax.
We moved onto pair work to practice drills set again, there was no blocking involved just backward compression as your partner attacked chudan punch, if you got hit then you DID NOT compress enough, after a few digs you soon learnt to compress, the explosion out was good as you were propelled deep into the target, finish the punch, relax, then do it all again and again.
During the drills counter attacks from compression were changed to kicks, now you had to travel backwards during the compression to allow the opponent no chance of a secondary punch, but more importantly you had the correct distance to kick and score.
This is not as easy as it sounds because in the compression phase you have to make the distance to suit your kick, but kicking from a compressed position does not come easily, although when Sensei Sid demonstrated it it was very effective and looked so comfortable for him.
We carried on the drills, changing kicks as instructed, using the full repertoire available to us. Some worked better than others for me, the mae geri and mawashi geri seemed to do the trick.
We finished off with some more training exercises to improve leg strength, posture, stability.
The final act was from a standing position being pushed over but using the compression to stop the movement and catapult yourself toward the attacker.
All in all 3 hours well spent, totally drained of energy, but buzzing from the experience.
My thanks go out to the RSKC students for supporting Sensei Bailes, Sensei Bailes for putting on the course, and more importantly Sensei Sid for giving up his time to show us these skills.
