Ridgeway Shotokan Karate Club
Risk Assessment.

The Ridgeway Shotokan Karate Club is an affiliated association to the Hampshire Shotokan Karate under the Japan Karate International & Japan Shotokan Karate Association. The karate club follows Martial Arts procedure by allowing students to join the club on condition that they adhere to the policy & regulation of the club. All students are introduced under the New Student procedure consisting of guidelines on what to wear, hall / Dojo procedure for health & safety, & welcome information about the club.

The karate club ensures all students maintain a martial arts licence under the registration of the JSKA & EKGB (English Karate Governing Body). This gives insurance to all students.

The Instructors provide Personal Instructors Insurance via Perkins & Slade & also Dojo Insurance via Perkins & Slade. The Instructors provide CRB checks (criminal records bureau) certificate for full disclosers. The Instructors hold diplomas of (3rd & 2nd degree) Black Belt registered in Japan.

The karate club follows the Child Protection Policy of the HSK, both Amanda and Dave Gisby are current appointed Officers. Student Penhallurick is the HSK Child Protection Officer and has attended relevant courses.

Membership involves giving confidential information of contact details, in view of the purpose of contact only, along with any medical conditions that may effect from physical exercise.

First aid box is present at each session & first aid cover is supplied by the venue & the instructors have valid Certification of Attendance covering Emergency First Aid valid until July 2010. Any accident is to be reported into the accident book & parents informed of details.

The karate club operates to the hirers agreement of the halls terms & condition of hire.
The karate clubs activities involve a gentle warm up & stretching session to prevent injuries from a starting point.

The karate activities will involve the following:

Karate Basics: The students perform karate techniques, involving punches, kicks, & blocks, either with partners , or in line into fresh air.

Karate Kata: The student will perform a solo routine of pre attacks & blocks in combination. At higher levels the students will perform the application of the kata with partners offering a high level of control & contact to a minimum.

Karate Kumite (Sparring): A series of sparring routines ranging from beginners level to advance. These are taught to the level slowly by count & then on there own time under instruction.
At Beginners level no contact is made & punches blocks, kicks are performed from a safe distance.
At Intermediate level the contact is still very controlled (touch contact).
At Advance level the contact made is in a controlled manner under supervision of the instructor.

Protection at this level with advisory, groin guards, chest protectors, gum shields, & hand mitts.

Should any sweeps or take downs be performed it will be only at a high level without mats and with control. Lower grades would perform take downs & sweeps under strict instruction, with mats provided.
