Newbury Raceday Picnic 01 August 10
The RSKC held its 2nd annual picnic at Newbury races, we met up at the RSKC dojo at 10:30 and left to make our way to the race course.
On arrival we parked up waiting for the gates to open, DJ kindly informed us that the weather was about to get a bit horrid, in typical fashion we thanked him for his input. The Girls and Ian were chatting on 1 side of the track and the Boys were doing the same on the opposite side. Eventually we passed through the entrance gate to the picnic area, parked up and set up our picnic area, some more keen than others, there were tented things being erected, we chatted, ate, drank, in anticipation of the racing.
Most of us used unorthodox methods of horse selection, Charlotte and Venecia looked through the race card and selected their winners for the day, they got 95% spot on, how do they do that??? the kids had the best system whatever it was. The kids were left to run around and enjoy themselves in the picnic enclosure, only coming back to eat, drink, or to report in which horse they had selected, and it would win.
The tannoy let us know it was all about to start, the horses went to the start gate, out came the money to place bets, £1 each way for most of us, others it was a bit more.
We all moved from our seats to the rails as the first race got going, the horses thundered past towards the finish line, we had a good view of the racing, we could also see the big screen to confirm the girls results.....yes, they had won again.
This was the order of the day, broken up with eating and drinking, supplemented with the occasional walk around, looking for the kids, who were having a great time being let loose to have the run of the paddock. The kids were very well behaved all day.
Pete supplied some native eats which were very nice, the dried beef was good.
Some of us more mature folk (older) just sat between races to absorb the sun that DJ insisted would not appear, shame on you DJ, some tanning was completed by Dave and Amanda ready for later in the month.
The afternoon passed quickly, it was soon time to go home.
The weather had been very good, all had a good time with great company, kids were safe, spent a few quid having a laugh, now for the journey home.
Thanks to all those that attended, hope you enjoyed it as much as Amanda and I did, we will be doing it again next year, so get your kids to save all their pennies to put on the horses.
