DAVE GISBY. 2nd DAN- JSKA

At the tender age of 42 I was introduced to the art of Shotokan Karate by my wife, Amanda, She had been doing the art for a number of years before having a forced break due to joining HM forces.   I only went along for a look, was asked if I wanted to join in for fun and I’ve been going ever since!

To start with I found it all very difficult, but with help from Sensei Stevan Harrison 5TH Dan JSKA  and my wife, Amanda, as well as the other black belts I was soon ready to attempt my first grading which thankfully (and with much relief) I passed.

I decided to set myself a goal of becoming a black belt, A task that at times felt a bit too far. I trained religiously for 10 hours a week, read books, watched videos, nagged the wife, and sweated a lot in the gym and in the Dojo (the karate hall).

At every opportunity, providing I had put in the relevant amount of training, I would grade, putting myself through all sorts of pain to reach my goal. I worked really hard on my problem areas to make them better, and after 4 years of training towards my goal I finally got the chance to attempt my black belt.

The grading was conducted after a lesson that was 1 and 1/2 hours long and very hard.  I was exhausted but still gave it my all. Unfortunately I did fail the grading the first time a, but finally with much relief got through on the 2nd attempt.

I passed my 2nd Dan in December 2006 on my first attempt. I would like to thank all of those who helped me get there. YOu know who you are.

During the last 4 years I have enjoyed nearly every minute of the training, I’ve entered competitions, Won and lost trophies, travelled around the UK on courses and championships training with some of the best of the best in Shotokan Karate.

As you can see, age, size, physical attributes, and fitness levels are not a disadvantage when taking up karate as it all can be improved. It’s down to what you want, and what you give, The Martial Art Spirit.
